How to Beat Applicant Tracking Systems

You’ve tailored your skills, listed your achievements, and updated your job history. Yet, you're still not getting callbacks. The likely culprit? You haven't optimized your resume for an Applicant Tracking System (ATS).
1. Use Standard Formatting
The quickest way to fail an ATS test is by trying to be too creative with your resume's layout. Most ATS platforms are built to read plain text. Using complex columns, text boxes, headers, footers, photos, or graphics will confuse the parser. Use a straightforward, single-column layout.
2. Match the Job Description Keywords
ATS systems rely heavily on keyword matching. If the job description asks for "Content Marketing," don't just write "Blogging." Use the exact phrasing the employer uses. You can utilize our free ATS resume scanner to see exactly which words the parser is pulling from your document.
3. Stick to Standard Headings
While "Career Journey" might sound cool, an ATS is programmed to look for headings like "Experience," "Work History," "Education," and "Skills." If you deviate from these standard terms, the machine might fail to categorize your background, resulting in a blank profile on the recruiter's end.
4. Save in the Right Format
PDFs are generally the best choice because they preserve your formatting across devices. However, some older ATS platforms exclusively want DOCX files. If the employer does not explicitly allow PDFs, upload a DOCX. Always check instructions.
